Student Care & Support

At Highfield we feel that it is very important for our new overseas pupils to settle in as quickly as possible. On a short course, this is even more important.

It is normal for children away from home to feel homesick from time to time. The best advice is to encourage them to get stuck in to all the activities that are on offer, and to keep busy. Very soon it will pass, and the weeks will be flying by all too quickly! The staff at Highfield are kind and friendly. If any child is upset or worried about anything, they will be surrounded by caring, experienced staff to offer help and support.

Summer camp activities friendshipsThe Director of Boarding & Pastoral Care, Houseparents and the Course Nurse, provide dedicated pastoral focus and resource, but all staff have the responsibility for ensuring a home-from-home environment for children in which they feel happy, safe and cared for. Due to the age of students on this course, they are supervised at all times.

We take very seriously our duty to safeguard and promote the welfare of the children in our care. Our Summer School Safeguarding Policy provides further detail. All other policies may be read on our Policies page.

Contact with Home

Making friends English Summer CampWe understand how important it is to hear from your child regularly and to know that they are happy and safe. If children are travelling alone, parents are notified as soon as we meet the child at the airport, and then again once they have safely arrived at Highfield. Every night we send an email to all parents informing them about the day's activities including a selection of photos. Parents can also follow us on Twitter and Facebook for regular photos, videos and updates throughout the day.

Children are allocated a time slot to call home depending on their time zone, and we encourage them to phone home every other day. Students are given a wifi code to use on their mobile phone enabling them to contact their parents via Facetime, Skype etc. However, due to the age of children on our course, mobile phones are stored safely away and students are only allowed them during supervised phone call times, or on excursions off site. This is an important part of our policy to keep children safe during their stay with us, and to make sure that they actively engage, make new friends, and get the most out of everything on offer.

Sleeping Accommodation

sleeping accommodation residential summer campThe residential rooms are located on the upper floors of the school building and divided into separate girls' and boys' areas. Students sleep in dormitories of typically between 4 to 6 children. The boarding staff also have bedrooms close to the dormitories so there is always someone nearby if needed. A weekly laundry service is provided by the Course Matron.

Food

Food at our school is very important - just ask the children! We have a fantastic team of enthusiastic and dedicated chefs who provide the children with a varied choice of delicious, nutritious and well-balanced meals, cooked on the premises using the healthiest cooking methods. We are are very proud of our 5 stars awarded from the Food Standards Agency for environmental health. Summer School students enjoy a choice of breakfasts (including an English cooked breakfast!) a three course lunch, and a hot supper in the evening. There are also home made snacks available at breaktimes throughout the day.
