Prep school sport is about learning to perform together. If we can achieve that, then enjoyment is guaranteed and victory probable. We encourage all children to work hard and make the most of every sporting opportunity. Taking part in sport allows children to learn about themselves and their peers and instils vital life values such as sportsmanship, teamwork and humility.
The proof of our success comes from the 23 Sports Scholarships that have been awarded to our pupils to top Senior Schools over the last five years. Senior Schools such as Cranleigh School, Radley College, Marlborough College, Wellington College and Canford School.
Our extensive sports facilities include an indoor swimming pool (heated by our own wood-chip biomass), full size all-weather Astro, 15 natural pitches, four tennis and netball courts, 9-hole golf course, a squash court, cross country course and beautiful woodland used for mountain biking. Sports offered during Games are: Football, Rugby, Hockey, Cricket, Squash, Tennis, Athletics, Cross Country, Tennis, Netball and Lacrosse.
Our grounds are second to none, they allow us to put out 25 teams on a single match day meaning we can take part in over 1000 fixtures in one year. We have the capacity to hold 11 matches at once, and standing at our Pavilion it is possible to see every single match being played. Nowhere else on our sports circuit is that possible.
Every coach takes great pride in enabling each child to gain confidence. Our coaching philosophy is specific to every individual and encourages personal skill development. It is our continued aim to see children of all abilities develop new knowledge and techniques in coaching sessions and to transfer these to competitive matches.
Every child benefits from five afternoons of Games and an additional weekly PE lesson consisting of Swimming, Badminton, Gymnastics, Athletics, Basketball or Sports Leadership. We regularly welcome professional athletes and expert coaches from top Senior Schools, such as Charterhouse and Marlborough. They hold masterclasses with the children to bring an extra dimension to our coaching and ensures the children understand the newest rules and tactics. We are also personally fortunate to have several of our coaches involved in the England Hockey Player Pathway System and our training sessions reproduce what you would see at county level training sessions. Children receive continuous feedback on their performance. Coaches often record training sessions that they watch with the children afterwards so that the children can clearly see where they could improve.
Children are taught the importance of resilience and determination. Children try new skills and experience success and failure. We instil in all children the fundamental value that losing is not failure, but an opportunity to learn to better themselves, and this applies both on and off the sports pitch. Children at Highfield understand that sport is about more than winning and recognise that to focus only on winning does not make you a good sportsperson, nor guarantees success.
Extra-curricular Sporting Opportunities
Children are encouraged to pursue sports beyond the curriculum in our optional after school clubs. Clubs change on a termly basis and provide a perfect place to develop skills in a favourite sport, or perhaps to try something new. Additional swimming and tennis lessons are also available.
Additional extra-curricular sports are golf, sailing, archery, horse riding, mixed hockey, judo and ultimate frisbee.
