Nursery and Reception | Brookham School
The Nursery and Reception years are the very first exciting steps on a child's learning journey. Here at Brookham School we believe this should be a magical time, full of adventure and discovery. Our experienced Head of Early Years, Mrs Samantha Forster, and her team go the extra mile to deliver the best possible start to your child's education. Children at Brookham School benefit from small class sizes and high staff to children ratios which means our teachers have time to develop each individual child helping them to build the foundations to becoming a courageous and independent life-long learner.
We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage as the core of our Early Years Education for Nursery and Reception. The curriculum is divided into seven areas of learning:
- Communication and language
- Physical development
- Personal, social and emotional development
- Understanding the world
- Expressive arts and design
Children can join our Nursery from the moment they turn 2 years old. At Brookham Nursery we nurture a love of discovery. We captivate the curiosity and inquisitive minds of our very youngest children. Child-led activities give the children freedom to learn at their own pace. It allows them to develop and pursue their own interests. We give our children the tools to investigate the world around them rather than the answers to learn. We encourage the children to ask questions and to think and solve problems for themselves.
Children at Brookham Nursery reap the huge rewards of daily access to our great outdoors. Learning is taken outside at every opportunity and our private woodlands offer the most fantastic learning opportunities that really does set us apart from other nurseries. Children have the opportunity to listen to a story whilst toasting marshmallows around the campfire one day or go hunting for mini-beasts in the woods another. The opportunities are endless.

Children leave Nursery and move up to Reception in the September following their fourth birthday. Moving up to Reception at Brookham is very simple, it’s just a few footsteps across the hall. We understand that there are choices to be made at every stage of your child’s education and we are here to help guide you through them so that you can make the right decision for your child whether you choose to stay with us after Nursery or move on.
The Early Years’ education continues through Reception. Classes are small so your child is recognised and understood. Teachers will truly know your child and help to develop their interests and passions, providing an education that is tailored to them.
Reception is more formalised than Nursery, but there’s still plenty of time for exploring and discovery. Lessons in literacy and numeracy take place in the mornings. In literacy, children develop their writing, speaking and listening skills and daily reading ensures a love of stories is captured at an early age. In numeracy, children develop understanding of mathematical concepts such as addition, subtraction, shapes and measurement. In the afternoons children from all the Reception classes meet in our shared area where they collaborate and experiment in child-initiated activities. And of course, there’s plenty of opportunities for outdoor learning whether that be planting vegetables in the kitchen garden or pond dipping for creatures in our nature pond.
The only way to find out if Brookham School is the perfect choice for your family is to come and visit and see the school in action. Mrs Sophie Baber, our Headteacher would be delighted to welcome you and take you on a bespoke tour or join us on one of our Open Mornings.
